Dark chocolate specifically, is known to have some interesting health benefits. This normally means the higher percentage cocoa the better. It’s not only a great little pick me up, but it has some benefits that can be rewarding too!
Reduces risks of depression
Studies show that dark chocolate can reduce the risks of depression by up to 70%. Studies were on 13,000 people and scientists were pleasantly surprised at the outcome. The components in dark chocolate (e.g flavonoids and phenylethylamine) have some great mood boosting effects.
Can improve blood pressure
This is down to the marvelous flavonoids. They help support the production of nitric oxide in the inner cell lining of blood vessels. This helps to relax the vessels and improve flow of blood. This in turn can lower blood pressure.
Skin benefits
The flavanoids also help protect against sun damage to skin. This doesn’t mean you can cut out the sun cream of course, but it also protects against the breakdown of collagen which is known to keep skin looking plump and youthful.
Feel good
Dark chocolate tastes great and science proves that the brain releases endorphin’s when consumed, which are the chemicals in the brain that create feelings of pleasure.
High in antioxidants
It has high levels of antioxidants hidden inside, and even minerals like magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron and selenium. Antioxidants help protect cells, and the more you consume the better!
